Erin Kay
Spangler spent her childhood first in San Diego, California then in the mid
nineties made the long
journey to Georgia. Upon her graduation from Kennesaw State University, where
she received a Bachelor of Fine
Art Degree in both Ceramics and Photography; Erin quickly settled into life in
her home studio on her family's
acreage in rural Fairmount, Georgia. It was in her new studio that Erin's focus
turned to ceramics.
Approaching
each piece of pottery as if it were a blank canvas waiting to be carved Erin
free hand carves her patterns
into the raw clay. She pulls inspiration from designs and patterns seen
throughout Native American art as well
as nature from her surrounding rural landscape. For Erin wheel throwing is the
beginning of a multi-step process in which she transforms raw clay into
functional, carved, glazed pieces of art
